A Stitch of Independence

The Background

Laxmi Bai lives in a remote tribal village in Jhabua district. For years, her family depended entirely on erratic monsoon rains for subsistence farming. When her husband fell ill in 2019, Laxmi had to borrow money from a local moneylender at an exorbitant interest rate of 5% per month just to cover medical expenses and basic household needs.

The Challenge

Trapped in a vicious cycle of debt, the family's small landholding was on the verge of being seized. The most painful consequence for Laxmi was pulling her two teenage daughters out of school because she could no longer afford the transport fees to the nearby town. "I felt like I was failing my daughters by repeating the cycle of poverty I grew up in," Laxmi recalls.

The Intervention

In early 2021, MITRA Foundation field workers organized a mobilization meeting in her village. Laxmi hesitantly joined the newly formed "Navjeevan Women's Self-Help Group (SHG)."

• Financial Literacy: Laxmi learned basic accounting, the concept of collective saving, and the dangers of informal debt.
• Skill Development: Identifying a local demand for school uniforms, MITRA enrolled her in a 3-month intensive tailoring program.
• Micro-Credit Linkage: After 6 months of disciplined SHG saving, the group facilitated a low-interest bank loan of ₹25,000 for Laxmi to purchase an industrial sewing machine and raw materials.

The Impact

Today, Laxmi is not just a tailor; she is an entrepreneur. She secured a contract to stitch uniforms for three local government schools. She employs two other women from her village to help meet demand.

Most importantly, her daughters are back in high school. Laxmi is now the President of the Village Organization (a federation of 12 SHGs) and actively counsels other women on financial independence.
